What is the glycemic index and what is the difference with the concept of glycemic load?

Glycemic index assigns a numeric score (0-100) to a food based on how it makes your blood sugar rise.

VS

Glycemic load measures how a food affects your blood glucose, taking into account the amount of carbohydrates per portion size.

The glycaemic index and the glycaemic load do not always coincide. This is very common among fruits        , let’s see what happens with watermelon!

Glycemic INDEX

Glycemic LOAD

= 75 → HIGH glycemic INDEX

= Glycemic index x g carbohydrates per portion  / 100
= 75 x 7.5 /100 = 5.6 → LOW glycemic LOAD

Watermelon has a high glycemic index but a serving of watermelon has a low glycemic load. Remember that glycemic load provides food’s real-life impact on your sugar!
