What is the difference between white fish and fatty fish?

Fatty fish contain more fat in their tissues and have a larger variety of fatty acids than white fish. Salmon, tuna, sardine, trout are examples of fatty fish. White fish includes hake, sea bass, sole, cod among others.

Fatty fish is the best source of omega-3 fatty acids. Although the available evidence does not support a significant beneficial role of omega-3 fatty acids on glycemic control, they have many other health benefits:

  • Protect against cardiovascular disease and overall mortality.
  • Have anti-inflammatory properties which are important to prevent many chronic diseases.
  • Important for brain development and health of nervous system.
