I am vegetarian, could the Diabetes Plate Method be adapted?

But first, what is vegetarianism and what are the different types?

Vegetarianism is a diet based primarily on the consumption of plant products that excludes foods of animal origin. The following table shows the food groups consumed by each type of vegetarianism:

Switching to a plant-based diet can feel overwhelming, especially when ensuring nutritional needs.

In any kind of vegetarianism always remember the following principles:

Eat a variety of plant protein foods: black or kidney beans, cooked split peas, and yellow or green lentils. Nuts and seeds are also great options

Make simple choices including whole grains and colorful fruits and vegetables in your dishes: pasta with vegetables and chickpeas or tofu-vegetable stir-fry

If you skip dairy, get calcium from fortified products like soy beverages, tofu, and some breakfast cereals. Dark-green leafy vegetables like collard greens, spinach, and kale are sources of calcium, too.

For a veggie snack choose unsalted nuts or raw veggies with hummus. You can also use nuts in salads or main dishes to bump up your protein, dietary fiber, and healthy fats.
